Theory and practice hand in hand? There’s nowhere better to do this than at TSR
TSR offers you the best of both worlds: an academic education and hands-on experience of our day-to-day business. Knowledge is more than just understanding theory – it needs to be put to the test. A very important aspect of these special courses at TSR that combine an apprenticeship with a university degree.
  • Apprenticeships with a BA in Economics

If you are interested in studying at university as well as enjoying the advantages of a practical apprenticeship then we are the right company for you: we cooperate with two universities making it possible for you to study for your degree while doing your apprenticeship at TSR. During this time, you are taught all the business know-how needed for someone heading towards a future specialist or managerial position. Theory and practice are very closely linked here to enable such in-depth and hands-on knowledge to be learned in such a short period of time.

  • The most important facts for your future

    • What the course involves

      • Your university course lasts for three or four years depending on which subject you study. Your apprenticeship course can last up to 2½ years – again depending on which course you choose. Your apprenticeship ends when you take your final exam at the Chamber of Commerce. You get to work in all the business areas relevant to your course (e.g. commercial administration, sales, logistics) and are given support and help by the trainers and professionals you work with.

      Your qualifications and skills

      • To be able to do this combination of apprenticeship and university degree, you must have an allgemeine Hochschulreife or Fachhochschulreife with very good grades in Maths, German and English. What’s more, you must be very interested in how a business works and enjoy working as part of a team. You have strong communication skills, are both very reliable and dedicated and enjoy learning. Ideally, you have already gathered some work experience from internships and/or part-time jobs and speak one or more foreign languages.

      Your future prospects

      • Approximately six months before you are due to finish your course, we will sit down together to discuss your future role in our company. You can, of course, choose yourself which direction you would like your career to take to reflect your knowledge and skills.

  • Two qualifications in 3½ years: the apprenticeship companies and unis

Some initial information about this course can be found below as well as on the universities’ own websites. Should you have any questions, please contact the person in your region responsible for these courses.

TSR also cooperates with the Hamburg School of Business Administration (HSBA) in Hamburg.

    • Admission requirements to study at the HSBA

      • It is essential that you have the necessary school qualifications (such as an Abitur or Fachabitur) allowing you to study at university as well as good grades in German, Maths and English. It is possible to take an entrance exam at the HSBA if you don't have the grades required. As some of the lectures are held in English, you must be able to prove that you have an adequate knowledge of the language either by taking the English entrance exam or showing you have taken comparable exams such as TOEFL, IELTS or CAE (minimum level B2 / European framework of reference).

      Your timetable

        • Your apprenticeship consists of separate alternate phases of practical work and theory. On average, you spend 40% of your time at the HSBA and 60% at our company. While you are completing your practical experience at our company, you will get to know all of the different departments at TSR. This gives you the best possible basis to put the theory you have learned into practice. Moreover, you also take part in an additional course that lasts a total of 18 Saturdays to prepare you for your Chamber of Commerce exam. Which means, of course, that everything is in place for you to pass your course with flying colors!

    • Linda Schmidt – business administration apprentice and student in the 2nd year of her course at TSR

      • What is the best way to describe your apprenticeship at TSR?

There are two words that best sum up the everyday tasks that I have to carry out as part of my apprenticeship: challenging and varied. Whether it has to do with weighing the trucks at the beginning of the course, getting to know our materials by working at the plants, helping out with and doing tasks for the head of department or entering business transactions into the materials management system – you certainly feel as if you are really contributing towards the business. What’s important here is taking on the right amount of responsibility.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

I believe it’s really important that apprentices feel they are part of the team and this is most certainly the case here at TSR. There is also a very good chance of being taken on by TSR at the end of the course and there are many opportunities for people to move up the career ladder quickly.

How does the combination of apprenticeship and university degree work at TSR?

I was really interested in doing this course at TSR as soon as I read about it. You study for your university degree at the FOM in the evening and it doesn’t take long before you can put the theory learned during the Business Administration course into practice at the company.

So what is your overall verdict on doing an apprenticeship at TSR?

Anyone who’s interested in our industry and in the company’s business and who’d like to do an apprenticeship in a future-oriented firm should apply to us!
