You only need to look at the way the global economy and population are steadily growing to know that there really is no alternative to recycling. Our planet’s natural resources are finite. Any attempts to satisfy demand with primary raw materials alone are bound to fail. What’s more, far more energy is needed to produce ferrous and non-ferrous metals from primary raw materials than to recycle them – which also means, of course, that the carbon emissions are much higher as well. With the need for metal recycling being so urgent, there is no getting away from the fact that companies supplying recycled raw materials such as ours are inextricably linked with environmental protection, resource conservation and sustainable development. The best way to discover just how sustainable and worthwhile metal recycling actually is and to see how it protects the environment and our climate is to take a look at aluminium. The amount of energy needed to recycle drinks cans and use the recycled aluminium to create new products is twenty times lower than when the primary raw material bauxite is used. This also means, of course, 95 percent fewer carbon emissions. We believe it is really important to promote the role of sustainability in the economy and to help our customers use sustainable development to add real value to their business. It was precisely for this reason that we decided to find a way to document the efforts firms have been making to make their operations more sustainable: TSR’s Sustainability Certificate. Divided up into 17 main categories, this certificate details how the metal recycling activities carried out by TSR on behalf of its clients help reduce consumption. An extremely interesting document – not just for large corporations that are obliged to publish environmental reports but also for small and medium-sized firms. Especially as the whole subject of sustainability is becoming increasingly important for all those running a business. What’s more, the Sustainability Certificate delivers pertinent information about a customer’s operations. For example, highlighting where improvements can still be made in the area of metal recycling.
The calculations take into account all the different processes that each individual type of metal goes through – from storing and collecting the material, to transporting it, all the way through to recycling it. Negative factors (such as the carbon emissions produced by the refuse collection vehicles) and positive factors (e.g. returning recycled materials to production cycles) are offset against each other. The final result is an exact list of how the recycling activities reduce consumption of energy and primary raw materials and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The first things that come to mind when you think of sustainability tend to be environmental and economic factors. Sustainable development, however, also includes social components, which must also be fulfilled. This involves a company playing a responsible role in society – treating its employees fairly as well as creating jobs for low-skilled people. TSR is leading the way in both these areas.
